Abstract

This paper describes the development of technologies for ocean exploration based on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The Ocean Virtual Underwater Environment (OceanVUE), described here, supports the autonomous ocean sampling network (AOSN), in which several AUVs work together and are supported by a sophisticated communication and control infrastructure. OceanVUE serves both as a simulation environment for testing pieces of the AOSN and as an operator interface for remote control of AUV field experiments. The goal of the research is a network- distributed software environment allowing a graphical user interface and oceanographic, acoustic, and hydrodynamic simulation models to run in concert on a network of workstations
